A 7.4 R magnitude hit Vanuatu’s capital Port Vila on Tuesday (17/12), killing at least six people and damaging buildings, a number of which collapsed according to local media. The depth of the earthquake was initially estimated at 10 kilometers but later it was placed at 43 kilometers.
A magnitude of 5.5 R struck near the same location, after the main earthquake.
Prime minister, Charlot Salwai, declared a state of emergency.
