Clint Hill, a former Secret Service agent who made history by running into the back of John F. Kennedy’s limousine in a vain attempt to save him when the then US president was assassinated in Dallas on November 22, 1963, has died at the age of 93.
“The Secret Service is deeply saddened by the passing of Clint Hill,” the agency, which is tasked with protecting important political figures, said in a statement yesterday, praising his “unwavering devotion” to the Kennedy family during the tragedy, as well as to presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.
Haunted by what he considered his personal failure, Clint Hill retired from the Secret Service in 1975, at the age of 43.
In his first interview about the JFK assassination, he confessed to CBS’s “60 Minutes” that he felt guilt and sorrow for not being able to shield the president with his body, should he be hit by bullets.
He had run and climbed onto the rear bumper of the presidential sedan to shield the then-president and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy with his body, but it was too late. He had accompanied them to the hospital.

Ο Κλιντ Χιλ, άλλοτε πράκτορας της Secret Service που έμεινε στην ιστορία επειδή έτρεξε κι ανέβηκε στο πίσω μέρος της λιμουζίνας του Τζον Φιτζέραλντ Κένεντι, προσπαθώντας μάταια να τον σώσει, όταν ο τότε πρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ δολοφονήθηκε στο Ντάλας, την 22η Νοεμβρίου 1963, απεβίωσε σε ηλικία 93 ετών.
«Η Secret Service θλίβεται βαθιά για τον θάνατο του Κλιντ Χιλ», ανέφερε χθες σε ανακοίνωσή του το σώμα αυτό, που είναι επιφορτισμένο με τη φύλαξη σημαντικών πολιτικών προσωπικοτήτων, εξαίροντας την «ακλόνητη αφοσίωσή του» στην οικογένεια Κένεντι κατά τη διάρκεια της τραγωδίας, όπως και στους προέδρους Ντουάιτ Αϊζενχάουερ, Λίντον Τζόνσον, Ρίτσαρντ Νίξον και Τζέραλντ Φορντ.
Στοιχειωμένος από αυτή που θεωρούσε προσωπική του αποτυχία, ο Κλιντ Χιλ αποσύρθηκε από τη Secret Service το 1975, σε ηλικία 43 ετών.
Στην πρώτη του συνέντευξη για τη δολοφονία του JFK, είχε εξομολογηθεί στην εκπομπή «60 Minutes» του CBS ότι αισθανόταν ενοχές και θλίψη επειδή δεν κατάφερε να προστατεύσει με το σώμα του τον πρόεδρο, να χτυπηθεί αυτός από τις σφαίρες.
Είχε τρέξει και ανέβει στον πίσω προφυλακτήρα του ανοικτού προεδρικού αυτοκινήτου για να καλύψει με το σώμα του τον τότε πρόεδρο και την πρώτη κυρία Τζάκλιν Κένεντι, αλλά ήταν πολύ αργά. Τους είχε συνοδεύσει ως το νοσοκομείο.
