Η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση ανακοίνωσε ότι η Βουλγαρία πληροί τα κριτήρια προκειμένου να υιοθετήσει το ενιαίο νόμισμα την 1η Ιανουαρίου 2026, κάτι που θα καταστήσει τη χώρα το 21ο μέλος της ευρωζώνης, τρία χρόνια μετά την είσοδο της Κροατίας.
Η επίσημη απόφαση αναμένεται να ληφθεί από τους υπουργούς Οικονομικών της ΕΕ στις 8 Ιουλίου.
Χιλιάδες διαδηλωτές συγκεντρώθηκαν το Σάββατο στη Σόφια προκειμένου να εκφράσουν την αντίθεσή τους. Το σχέδιο προκαλεί φόβους για εκτόξευση των τιμών. Σύμφωνα με πρόσφατες δημοσκοπήσεις, οι πολίτες της Βουλγαρίας είναι μοιρασμένοι ως προς την αποδοχή της ένταξης της χώρας τους στην Ευρωζώνη το προσεχές έτος, αφού σχεδόν το 50% των ερωτηθέντων δεν επιθυμούν την ένταξη της χώρας στην ευρωζώνη το προσεχές έτος.
Σημειώνεται ότι βάσει των Συνθηκών, όλα τα κράτη – μέλη της ΕΕ είναι υποχρεωμένα να υιοθετήσουν το ευρώ ως εθνικό τους νόμισμα, με εξαίρεση τη Δανία η οποία διατηρεί «δικαίωμα εξαίρεσης».

This paves the way for Bulgaria to adopt the euro as of 1 January 2026 and become the 21st EU Member State to join the euro area, says Chief Economist Philip R. Lane.
The European Union has announced that Bulgaria meets the criteria to adopt the single currency on January 1, 2026, making it the 21st member of the eurozone, three years after Croatia joined.
The formal decision is expected to be taken by EU finance ministers on July 8.
Thousands of protesters gathered in Sofia on Saturday to voice their opposition. The plan has sparked fears of a price hike. According to recent polls, Bulgarians are divided on whether they would accept their country joining the eurozone next year, with almost 50% of those polled not wanting the country to join the eurozone next year.
It is noted that under the Treaties, all EU member states are obliged to adopt the euro as their national currency, with the exception of Denmark, which retains a “right of opt-out”.
Today, Bulgaria is one step closer to adopting the euro.

This will mean more investment and trade with euro area partners, and more stability and prosperity for the Bulgarian people.
Bulgaria will also take its rightful place in shaping euro area decisions.
