A man from California won $50 million in a lawsuit against Starbucks after a tea spill left him with third-degree burns in his most sensitive area.
The incident occurred in 2020, when Michael Garcis stopped his car at a Starbucks store in Los Angeles to order hot tea. As soon as the driver took his order from the window, the tray fell on him.
Michael Garcia suffered third-degree burns to his genitals, groin and inner thighs and has permanent and life-changing disfigurement after collecting the drink at a California drive-through, according to his legal team.
His negligence lawsuit blamed the injuries on Starbucks, claiming an employee did not wedge the scalding-hot tea firmly enough into a takeaway tray.
The court sided with him, ruling Starbucks negligent, but the coffee giant plans to appeal the verdict, arguing the sum is steep.
