Four planes, including the presidential plane, took off from Iran on Wednesday for the Oman capital, Muscat, despite Iranian airspace being closed for days. Their flight trackers were activated in southeastern Iran, making it unclear where the planes took off from.
Tehran did not provide any explanation for the flights, and Oman did not immediately confirm the arrival of Iranian officials in the sultanate.
There was no official comment, but analysts believe they are likely Iranian negotiators heading to ceasefire talks.
Oman has played a key role as a mediator between the United States and Iran in five rounds of talks on Tehran’s nuclear program.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei denied that Iran had sent negotiators to Oman.
Jerusalem Post reported that the Iranians conveyed a message to Qatar on Wednesday that, together with Oman, they were trying to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
