Images of the Sarandi River in Buenos Aires, Argentina, have caused concern. As can be seen in the video below, the river’s waters have turned red.
The area is home to tanneries and other industries that process animal hides using chemicals, but along part of its banks are many homes and an ecological reserve.
The photos and footage have sparked fears that industrial chemicals have been dumped into the Sarandi River, which flows into the River Plate on the southern outskirts of the city.
Officials in the municipality of Avellaneda said they suspect the presence of aniline, a toxic substance used in medicines and dyes.

Ανησυχία έχουν προκαλέσει οι εικόνες που παρουσιάζει ο ποταμός Σαράντι στο Μπουένος Άιρες στην Αργεντινή. Όπως φαίνεται και στο βίντεο που ακολουθεί τα νερά του ποταμού έχουν γίνει κόκκινα.
Η περιοχή φιλοξενεί βυρσοδεψεία και άλλες βιομηχανίες που επεξεργάζονται δέρματα ζώων με τη χρήση χημικών ουσιών, αλλά κατά μήκος μέρους των όχθες της υπάρχουν πολλά σπίτια και ένα οικολογικό απόθεμα.
Οι φωτογραφίες και τα πλάνα προκάλεσαν φόβους ότι βιομηχανικά χημικά είχαν απορριφθεί στο Ρεύμα Σαράντι, το οποίο χύνεται στον ποταμό Πλέιτ στα νότια προάστια της πόλης.
Αξιωματούχοι του δήμου Avellaneda δήλωσαν ότι υποπτεύονται την παρουσία ανιλίνης, μιας τοξικής ουσίας που χρησιμοποιείται σε φάρμακα και βαφές.
