Concerns are growing about the ongoing and escalating seismic activity on the island of Santorini. To date, over 5,000 people (tourists and locals) have left the island for fear of a major earthquake and landslides in the area. One of the most famous Greek islands in the world, for its unique beauty, Santorini has been in the news in all international media in recent days.

What Greek scientists say about the earthquakes in Santorini
Professor of Geology and Natural Disaster Management, Efthimios Lekkas, spoke to MEGA tv channel about the sequence of earthquakes in the region.
“ This morning at 4.40 we had an earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale. The evening was relatively calm but then we had an upward surge. We estimate that this surge will continue in the coming days. With these earthquakes, it is slowly and gradually de-escalating. I would like an earthquake measuring 5.2-5.3 on the Richter scale so that the forces de-escalate more quickly. With an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, we estimate that there will be no impact on the island,” he initially said.
Mr.Lekkas added “”The scenario of 6 on the Richter scale and above has a small probability. The residents of Santorini should feel safe. There should not be this panic to flee that exists”.

On the other hand seismologist and former director of the Geodynamic Institute, Akis Tselentis, expressed in a Facebook post that “the great fault of Amorgos that gave us the devastating earthquake of 1956” has been activated, while also pointing out that seismic activity in Santorini is not de-escalating but, on the contrary, is intensifying.

Mr. Tselentis wrote on Facebook:
“Unfortunately, seismic activity is NOT DECREASING but on the contrary is intensifying. Only in these few days of February did the number of earthquakes greater than 4R exceed 40.
The seismic area is expanding towards the NE and it is obvious that the great fault of Amorgos that gave us the devastating earthquake of 1956 has been activated. The entire activity clearly has the characteristics of a PRESEISMIC sequence and unfortunately, as long as the main earthquake does not occur, its expected size will INCREASE.
The worst-case scenario is that we reach the magnitudes of 1956, but the most likely scenario is that we will soon have the main earthquake (unlike Arkalochori where we had a 4-month pre-seismic sequence), at which point we will enter the purely post-seismic phase, which will however last for several months until the summer, with dramatic impacts on the island’s tourism, which is not the best of building conditions”.
