Disney’s new “Snow White” movie, or rather say the new adaptation of the original 1937 film, has probably become the poisoned apple for Disney. And there are many reasons for that…

“Snow White” (2025) starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gabot as the Evil Queen premiered on March 21, 2025. The film cost $270 million to produce, and “Snow White” has grossed $45 million at the opening box office. Let’s remember that The Little Mermaid grossed $95.5 million and Maleficent grossed $69.4 million.
Αccording to estimations the film will not reach a happy ending box office success for Disney.
A fairy tale that started wrong from the beginning
- Zegler’s bad comments about the original film: Comments like “extremely dated when it comes to the ideas of women being in roles of power and what a woman is fit for”, “She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and the leader that her late father told her that she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave and true” and characterising the Prince as a stalker made a negative impact.

“I’m if gonna stand there 18 hours in a dress of an iconic Disney princess, I deserve to be paid for every hour that it’s streamed online.”

- CGI: Negative impact had also Disney’s idea to use CGI to create the seven dwarfs thus depriving dwarf performers of potential jobs.
- Casting: The casting choices had caused reactions from two different sides and opinions. The “white” Snow White that was being played by Rachel Zegler, an American actor of Colombian descent and Gabot which has recently caused reactions with its comments regarding the war in Gaza.
Viewers – regarding the final result on the big screen – are highlighting on social media – although it may be considered a socially unacceptable comment- that the Evil Queen cannot be more beautiful than Snow White!

The ratings
Along side with the low box office, viewers criticism is not moving at particularly flattering levels.
For example, in IMDb the rates remain “stable” at number 2..
In United States “Snow White” got so far a 2.6/10, in UK a 2.3/10, in Canada a 2.1/10 and in Germany (homeland of the Grimm brothers) a 1.9/10!

On Rotten Tomatoes things go a little better for Disney’s “Snow White”. The audience rated the film with a 75% while the film critics gave a 43%. Of particular interest are the comments from top critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

On CinemaScore “Snow White” got a B+ , a rate that is quite low for a this type of Disney movie. A ” B” grade at CinemaScore means generally that a movie is shaky. For those who do not know, CinemaScore is an ” industry leader in measuring movie appeal among theatre audiences” (as it is described on their website) founded in 1979 and it is based in LA.
