The international community is shocked by the jihadist suicide attack on the Greek Orthodox Church of the Prophet Elias in Damascus.
This attack is yet another indication of the situation in Syria, where the government is turning a blind eye to the ongoing killings of Christians.
According to media, no group immediately claimed responsibility, but the Syrian Interior Ministry said a fighter from the ISIL (ISIS) group entered the church and fired at the people there before detonating himself with an explosives vest, echoing some witnesses’ testimonies.
A preliminary death toll was reported at 22 people killed, but state news agency SANA, citing the country’s Ministry of Health, reported on Monday that 25 victims had now been counted.
According to eyewitnesses, two jihadists stormed the church—one opened fire on worshippers; the second detonated himself. Inside the church were more than 200 Christians.
According to a church father, the Syrian government is talking about “the actions of individual individuals.” “The government is not helping us,” the father says.

Η σημερινή επίθεση αποτελεί ακόμη μία ένδειξη της κατάστασης στη Συρία, όπου η κυβέρνηση κλείνει τα μάτια στις συνεχιζόμενες δολοφονίες των χριστιανών.
Σύμφωνα με τα διεθνή μέσα ενημέρωσης, καμία ομάδα δεν ανέλαβε άμεσα την ευθύνη, αλλά το Υπουργείο Εσωτερικών της Συρίας δήλωσε ότι ένας μαχητής της ομάδας ISIS εισήλθε στην εκκλησία και πυροβόλησε τους ανθρώπους που βρίσκονταν εκεί πριν αυτοπυρποληθεί με ένα γιλέκο με εκρηκτικά, επαναλαμβάνοντας τις μαρτυρίες ορισμένων μαρτύρων.
Ο αρχικός αριθμός νεκρών αναφέρθηκε σε 22, αλλά το κρατικό πρακτορείο ειδήσεων SANA, επικαλούμενο το Υπουργείο Υγείας της χώρας, ανέφερε τη Δευτέρα ότι έχουν καταμετρηθεί μέχρι στιγμής 25 θύματα και πάνω από 80 τραυματίες.
Σύμφωνα με αυτόπτες μάρτυρες, δύο τζιχαντιστές εισέβαλαν στην εκκλησία – ο ένας άνοιξε πυρ εναντίον των πιστών. Ο δεύτερος αυτοπυρπολήθηκε. Μέσα στην εκκλησία βρίσκονταν περισσότεροι από 200 Χριστιανοί.
Σύμφωνα μάλιστα με πάτερ της εκκλησίας, η κυβέρνηση της Συρίας κάνει λόγο για “πράξεις μεμονωμένων ατόμων”. “Δε μας βοηθάει η κυβέρνηση”, λέει ο πάτερ.
