The US Secret Service shot an armed man, after midnight, about a block away from the White House, according to the agency’s statement.
The incident took place on the west side of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
In the statement it is reported that the armed man was a suicidal individual who may have been traveling to Washington, D.C., from Indiana.
The man, who’s identity is so far unknown, approached a Secret Service holding a fire arm at a checkpoint near the White House. The officers ordered him to drop his weapon, but he refused to comply. Then he pointed the gun toward them and an agent shot him in the lower body.
The suspect was taken to a hospital.
Authorities are now investigating the man’s motives and how he gained access to the restricted area.

Οι μυστικές υπηρεσίες των ΗΠΑ πυροβόλησαν έναν ένοπλο άνδρα, μετά τα μεσάνυχτα, περίπου ένα τετράγωνο μακριά από τον Λευκό Οίκο, σύμφωνα με ανακοίνωση των Μυστικών Υπηρεσιών.
Το περιστατικό έλαβε χώρα στη δυτική πλευρά του κτιρίου του Εκτελεστικού Γραφείου του Αϊζενχάουερ. Στην ανακοίνωση αναφέρεται ότι ο ένοπλος άνδρας ήταν αυτοκτονικό άτομο που μπορεί να ταξίδευε στην Ουάσιγκτον, DC, από την Ιντιάνα.
Ο άνδρας, η ταυτότητα του οποίου είναι μέχρι στιγμής άγνωστη, πλησίασε τους ειδικούς φρουρούς κρατώντας ένα πυροβόλο όπλο σε ένα σημείο ελέγχου κοντά στον Λευκό Οίκο. Οι αστυνομικοί τον διέταξαν να ρίξει το όπλο του, αλλά εκείνος αρνήθηκε. Στη συνέχεια, έστρεψε το όπλο προς το μέρος τους και ένας πράκτορας τον πυροβόλησε στο κάτω μέρος του σώματος. Ο ύποπτος μεταφέρθηκε σε νοσοκομείο.
Οι αρχές διερευνούν τώρα τα κίνητρα του άνδρα και πώς απέκτησε πρόσβαση στην απαγορευμένη περιοχή.
