With 310 votes in favour, 307 against and 3 abstentions, Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz failed to be elected Chancellor in the first round of voting in the Bundestag. 316 votes were needed out of a total of 630 members.
The further process for the Bundestag to elect the Chancellor
Following Friedrich Merz’s failure to be elected Chancellor in the first round of voting in the federal parliament, the Bundestag now has 14 days to hold a new vote, in which the candidate must obtain 50% +1 of all its members. If a majority is still not achieved, a simple majority of the members present will suffice in a third round. Mr. Merz failed to secure the required majority of 316 out of 630 MPs. He was voted in by 310 (the CDU/CSU-SPD coalition has 328 MPs), 307 against, with 3 abstentions and one invalid vote. Nine MPs were absent from the process.
