The Norwegian royal family is in the shadow of scandals, with the wife of the heir to the throne, Princess Mette Marit, maintaining a “close” relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and her son, Marius Borg Højby, facing a prison sentence of up to 10 years.
Marius Borg Højby’s trial has begun
Marius Borg Højby (Princess Mette-Marit’s son from her previous marriage) faces 38 charges, including rape and physical and psychological violence against his ex-partner. According to CNN, the ex-partner accused him of beating her, trying to drown her and threatening to destroy her financially.
He is also charged with six other counts of non-consensual sexual filming and photography, as well as drug-related offenses.
Prosecutors in court detailed four counts of rape against the son of the wife of the Norwegian Crown Prince, with Marius Borg Hoiby denying the charges.
The trial will last 7 weeks and the royal couple are not expected to attend the courtroom. Crown Prince of Norway Haakon has told reporters that Mette-Marit would be away on a private trip during that period.
Princess Mette-Marit’s private emails to Epstein
The revelation of private emails between Princess Mette-Marit and Epstein has also caused a stir. In fact, communication between the two existed and continued after the sex offense charges to which Epstein had pleaded guilty.
As reported by Guardian, in a statement issued by the royal palace, Princess Mette-Marit said:
“I showed poor judgment and I deeply regret having had any contact with Epstein. It is simply disgraceful.” The same statement also states that their online correspondence stopped in 2014, when she realized that he was trying to exploit her, as a member of the Norwegian royal family, to reach other people.
The emails, which number about 1,000, were revealed with the release of files on the Epstein case by the US Department of Justice.
Their content suggests that Mette-Marit and Epstein had a “close” relationship. In one email, the princess writes to him that “you tickle my brain” and calls him “sweetheart” and “how sweet” in others.
In 2012, Mette-Marit told Epstein that he was “very charming” and asked if it was “inappropriate for a mother to suggest two naked women holding a surfboard for my 15-year-old son’s wallpaper?”

However, there is also an email from a person named “Boris” to Epstein that raises many questions, as it suggests that Mette-Marit was pregnant by Epstein.
